AI illustrations for an employee magazine

Komax Group

Published twice a year in German and English, Komagazin is the Komax Group’s employee magazine. Spanning around 40 pages, it brings together news, reports and people stories from the company’s day-to-day life – visually striking, finely crafted and led by a clear editorial concept. Linkgroup is responsible for both design and production. For two years now, we’ve been using AI to create selected illustrations, combining human creativity with the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

A magazine that connects

The cover alone signals what the magazine stands for: variation, identification and collaboration. Taking employees to different locations, diverse projects and special events, Komagazin blends information with emotion, creating both orientation and a sense of identification. As a market and technology leader in automated wire processing solutions, Komax places great importance on communicating in a high-quality, unifying way with its 3,100+ employees worldwide. The magazine’s high-quality editorial and design standards underscore this commitment: its creative concept features a rich mix of graphic elements and large-format imagery to set accents, create variety and draw attention to the compelling content.

Recipes from around the world

Each issue ends with a recipe contributed by an employee from one of the Komax companies. Deliberately placed as a finishing note, it stands apart visually while remaining firmly anchored in the magazine’s look and feel. At its centre is a large-format illustration that gives the recipe a stage of its own and the magazine a delectable conclusion.

From mise en place to illustration

To start the creative process, we set up a mise en place, brainstorming with the client to define the content, context and chosen form of visual language. We then select the ingredients – precise wording that clearly defines the style, atmosphere and details of the illustration. These are distilled into a carefully formulated prompt, which we refine step by step, adjusting and seasoning until we’re satisfied.

Humans lead with AI support

AI then takes over and serves up a set of visual proposals. Now it’s a question of nuance – for which our designers are required. It’s they who review the results, tweak details, sharpen the style and taste-test the final product so the illustration aligns perfectly with the Komagazin editorial design. Different visual styles – from oil painting and ink drawing to collage and illustration – can be developed for specific cases and applied throughout. Creative direction remains firmly in human hands – while AI is the diligent kitchen assistant helping with execution.

New tools, new possibilities

Used well, AI opens up new possibilities in image creation. The illustrations for Komagazin show just how essential our designers’ creative and technical expertise – and their sensitivity to style, context and culture – really are. Clear direction and precise prompts are what turn initial concepts into cohesive illustrations.

This is exactly where Linkgroup’s strength lies. Our team works with AI every day, understands its capabilities and guides clients transparently through the process. We use AI with intent – to deliver fresh ideas, high design quality and meticulous attention to detail, creating tailored solutions that are professionally executed and appetisingly presented.

“Demonstrating creativity, high quality and a keen feel for our topics, Linkgroup’s AI illustrations add a strong visual dimension to Komagazin and blend seamlessly into our editorial design.”
